State may move Centre for JNNURM funds

SHILLONG: The State Government is planning to move the Centre to sanction the funds under JNNURM despite the Government’s inability to conduct the first-ever municipal elections in Garo Hills even after rescheduling the polls.
One of the conditions put by the Centre for availing of the funds worth over Rs 100 crore is to hold the municipal polls in Garo Hills and elsewhere in the State.
Official sources on Tuesday said the Government might consider the option of writing to the Centre to inform that the elections could not be held in Garo Hills due to the law and order situation.
A Cabinet meeting will be called to discuss the strategy as to how to avail the funds despite the failure to hold the municipal elections.
“The State may plead the Centre to sanction the funds for the sake of development,” the sources said.
Claiming that adjournment of the elections cannot be termed as Government failure, a senior official said, “We think that the Centre will understand the ground situation and will do the needful as far as allocation of funds are concerned.”
