SHILLONG: The State Government has deposited Rs 50.38 crore with Ri-Bhoi district administration for acquiring land for expansion of the runway of the Umroi Airport.

“The fund for land compensation was allocated from the State Plan,” Transport Minister Abu Taher Mondal told The Shillong Times on Tuesday.

Mondal said the DC is expected to make a declaration under Land Acquisition Act, 1894 this week followed by display of public notices at suitable places near the plots to be acquired.

According to Section 8 of the Act, the proposed land which is supposed to be acquired has to be marked out, measured and planned.

Out of the 258 acres as sought by the Airport Authority of India for the expansion, the government has aimed to acquire 222 acres from Arka and Umden Mission villages while the defence authorities are expected to provide the rest 36 acres.

The Defence Ministry has been looking into the proposal for land acquisition for the airport expansion, Mondal said.

As per the expansion plan, length of the runway of Umroi airport would be extended from the existing 6000 feet to 7500 feet.
