PC wrongly quoted by media: Dr Gohain

GUWAHATI, July 1 – Chief convenor of the steering committee formed by the Sanmilita Jatiya Abhibartan (SJA) Dr Hiren Gohain today claimed that Union Home Minister was wrongly quoted by the media on the issue of release of the detained ULFA leaders.

Media today quoted the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram as saying at a press conference yesterday that he was not in favour of the release of the detained ULFA leaders for talks. Such talks can be held with the detained leaders still under detention.

However, Dr Gohain said that according to his information, the Union Home Minister had stated in the press conference that the Government would have to wait for the court’s decision on the release of the detained ULFA leaders. He did never said that the talks should be held with the detained leaders behind the bars, said the SJA chief convenor.

Dr Gohain also said that the SJA would meet the leaders of all the political parties and organisations in the later phases to build a national consensus on the ULFA insurgency issue.

It needs mention here that the SJA delegation led by Dr Gohain met the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and some senior leaders of the CPI and the CPI-M in its bid to create a favourable atmosphere for talks between the Government and ULFA.
