Efforts on to confirm Marak’s identity
Shillong: Efforts are on to confirm the identity of Pradip Marak, who was arrested along with ULFA leader Ranjan Chowdhury in Bangladesh, officials on Sunday said.
“We are making efforts to ascertain the national identity of Pradip Marak through diplomatic channels,” a top intelligence official, said on condition of anonymity.
It remains to be seen whether Marak is a Bangladeshi as a sizeable Garo population inhabits the neighbouring country, another intelligence official said.
Meanwhile, India is awaiting official confirmation from Bangladesh of the arrest of two ULFA rebels, Home Secretary GK Pillai said on Sunday.
“We have seen it (arrest) in the newspapers, but Bangladesh authorities will officially inform us of the arrest through diplomatic channels,” Pillai said in New Delhi.
Asked whether India would ask Bangladesh to hand over the arrested ULFA rebels, to stand trial in India, the Home Secretary said: “We will surely do that through proper diplomatic channels.” (IANS)
