SHILLONG: The State Government has signed an MoU with the State Bank of India to facilitate payment of wages to MGNREGS workers in a transparent and hassle-free manner.
Meghalaya is the first State in the North-East to adopt the “Banking Correspondence Model” to pay the beneficiaries of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
Via this model, the Government directly deposits the wages of workers into their personal accounts. The system will be initiated at all Village Employment Councils and Area Employment Councils in the blocks of East Khasi Hills and West Garo Hills districts, according to an official release. It will later be extended to VECs and AECs in other districts in a phased manner.
The MoU was signed by the Secretary to the State Government, F Kharlyngdoh, and Tilak Das, Deputy General Manager, State Bank of India, Rural Business, North Eastern Circle.
