Manabendra Sarma’s killing: Mahanta asks CM for CBI probe

Staff reporter
GUWAHATI, July 7 – Former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta today fired salvo at Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi daring him to seek investigation into the murder of Congress leader Manabendra Sarma by the Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI).

“If he can seek reinvestigation into a closed issue like LoC, when can’t he favour a CBI probe in all these cases,” Mahanta said during a press conference today.

On Gogoi being critical about Lt Gen (rtd) SK Sinha, the then Governor, for not endorsing prosecution sanction of Mahanta, the latter questioned the Chief Minister asking why he kept mum when the CBI was denied sanction against a Minister of his Government(2001-2006) in connection with ASCARD bank anomalies.

Mahanta also alleged that the Chief Minister is using the LoC scam as a mere issue to save his back whenever his Government is caught on the wrong foot.

Mahanta also criticized Gogoi questioning whether he has lost his faith on the judiciary, which had long back closed the LoC scam case.

“I want to ask Tarun Gogoi, who himself was a lawyer, whether he has lost faith on the ruling of the Court,” Mahanta said.

He also read out the ruling of the court which even dismissed the PIL challenging the then Governor’s decision to deny prosecution sanction against him.

“If he still believes in the judiciary system, then why is he talking about reopening of the case. Mahanta said, claiming that he was no way involved with the LoC scam.

Mahanta also sought fresh investigation into the killing of journalist Prahlad Goala and Anil Majumdar.
