LDF calls for Hartal in Kerala to protest price hike

Thiruvananthapuram, June 25 (PTI) CPI-M led ruling LDF in Kerala today called a state-wide 12-hour hartal tomorrow to protest the Centre’s decision to hike price of petroleum products.

The hartal would be between six in the morning to six in the evening, LDF Convener Vaikom Visam said.

Reacting to the hike, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said it would have a cascading effect on prices of essential commodities in the state. “People already reeling under the pressure of price rise would be further burdened,” he told reporters.

The veteran CPI-M leader alleged Congress-led UPA government at the Centre was following a policy of appeasing corporates and multinationals in the country.

State Finance Minister T M Thomas Issac said there was no justification for the hike in petroleum products as crude oil price in international market was not so high.
