JOWAI: Assam Government has started construction of a bridge at Moolber, in Jaintia Hills district, leading to tension in the border area.

Foundation stone of the bridge connecting Moolber and Psiar under Block I area was demolished in February last before its formal unveiling.

The FKJGP Jaintia Hills District Unit president Tuesday Lytep informed that Assam PWD has brought JCBs and labourers to the site to start construction of the bridge, which falls under Meghalaya.

“Assam has been trying to encroach into Meghalaya’s land in the name of development work and Meghalaya Government has done nothing to stop the illegal act,” he said. The FKJGP also alleged that some local villagers have been helping Assam to construct the bridge. “We will not allow construction of the bridge by Assam as we believe it is a ploy to encroach our land,” the FKJGP leader added. On February 23, Baithalangso MLA Dr MS Rongpi, Chief Executive Member of Karbi-Anglong Autonomous District Council (KAADC) Joyram Engleng and the SP of Hamren district of Assam failed to unveil the foundation stone, which was dismantled by some people suspected to be villagers of Block I. The people are against construction of the bridge by Assam Government.
