‘Cops involved in attack on jailbreak accused’

SHILLONG: The controversy over the Shillong jailbreak continues to make news. Under trial prisoner (UTP), Sankyntiew Decruse, involved in the jailbreak was assaulted by unknown persons after he was out on bail recently.
Decruse, who played a key role in the Shillong jailbreak, was assaulted by a group of persons here on May 3.
However, NGOs like CSWO who have been pursuing the entire jailbreak issue suspect that some cops were behind the assault as the UTP had confessed in the past that the jailbreak mastermind Fullmoon Dhar was killed in a fake encounter last year.
In an FIR lodged with the East Khasi Hills SP AR Mawthoh, chairperson of Steering Committee Against Murder of Democracy (SCAMoD) Agnes Kharshiing alleged that Decruse was at first kidnapped by two persons from Iewduh after blindfolding him. Later, he was forcibly taken to a jungle near Mawiong.
According to the FIR, the miscreants after forcing him to drink informed a third person over the phone that Decruse was in their custody and can be handed over to him.
But Decruse managed to overpower the duo and fled into the jungle where he stayed the whole night.
Later, out of fear, he took admission in Shillong Civil Hospital by a different name Wankitbok Khongsit.
“We suspect cops to be behind this incident as only police at the court of the district magistrate knew that Decruse was out on bail,” Agnes Kharshiing told reporters on Friday.
“If he wants to reform and become a good citizen, an opportunity should be given to him,” Kharshiing added.
Decruse, a UTP in Shillong District Jail, was granted bail on July 28 this year.
It may be recalled that Decruse deposed before the Jailbreak inquiry commission which is probing the incident of seven UTPs including Decruse led by hardcore criminal Fullmoon Dhar had escaped from the jail.
Few days later, the police shot dead Dhar while his six accomplices were re-captured by the police.
Kharshiing said the police should take action against the jailbreak perpetrators and police who were involved in the fake encounter.
