Autumn fest to stress nature tourism

Shillong: The Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF) will hold the Shillong Autumn Festival on November 20 and 21 at the Orchid Lake Resort, Umiam, on the theme ‘Tourism naturally’ also to declare the ‘‘International Year for Bio Diversity’’. Mobile brand, Idea, in association with Department of Tourism, Government of Meghalaya, are sponsors of Shillong Autumn Festival.

Addressing a press conference, MTDF General Secretary Kenneth Pala said the key difference in the approach of the Forum is at providing a platform to showcase the rich culture and way of life of people of the region and to motivate communities to take ownership of various interventions with an objective to promote entrepreneurs across the North-East.

The festival will help create environmental awareness and provide a platform to expose and buy natural, ethnic products of the State and North-East to promote tourism in the State.

The main emphasis of the Festival for the first day is Meghalaya-centric where music, dances and fashion of the State shall be showcased, as well as entertainment for children and youth. The final day will be North-East-centric and troops from the North-East Zone for Cultural Centre (NEZCC) will showcase their cultural activities. A painting exhibition on the theme “tourism naturally” will be unveiled on the final day. Other events include water sports and adventure activities.

Regarding traffic the questions, Kenneth said the Forum will work side by side with traffic police from Ri-Bhoi district and the KSU, adding that one should inculcate traffic sense in order to achieve smooth running of the festival.

With the increase of people attending the event every year, the Forum has kept a close watch on the distribution of permits to be sold. At the same time, local wine stores around the premises of the festival will be closed during the two-day programme.
