TEZPUR, Aug 21 – Hundreds of AASU activists stopped the construction work of the approach road to unload the turbines and other equipment for lower Subansiri hydel project at Jahaj Ghat here today. NHPC authority had engaged a large number of labourers to construct a approach road by using stones, broken bricks at Jahaj Ghat. Three barges and three ships of Bangladesh arrived Tezpur on August 18 from Kolkotta with two turbines and its casings along with four different valves for Lower Subansiri hydel project.
AASU, Tezpur unit is adamant not to allow unloading of the materials. Nitul Borah, president, AASU Tezpur unit said the organization will take all the steps to prevent the unloading of the materials for Lower Subansiri hydel project. He said AASU has been advocating against this mega hydel project since its inception. The members of the local unit of AASU staged dharna at Jahaj Ghat to prevent unloading of materials, he added. Meanwhile, Akhil Gogoi, KMSS, will arrive Tezpur tomorrow to initiate a mass movement against the mega dam project and to prevent offloading of materials from the barges.
