2 KHADC MDCs resign

SHILLONG: The power struggle in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) is evident once again following resignation of two Executive Members on Wednesday.

Independent MDC from Nongshken, Grace Mary Kharpuri and Congress MDC from Jirang, Artist Rani submitted their resignation letters to the Chief Executive Member Manstudy Nongrem on Wednesday.

Rani was in charge of Labour department while Kharpuri was in charge of the Professional Tax department.

Despite their resignation from the EC, the two MDCs maintained that they would continue to support the Congress-led Khasi Hills United Democratic Alliance (KHUDA) in the Council.

The two MDCs also informed that they had resigned on the advice of the CEM. “We have been alleged to be involved in the attempt to topple the EC. Therefore we have been asked to resign,” Kharpuri maintained. It may be reminded that Kharpuri, Rani and former KHADC CEM and Nongpoh MDC Dr Celestine Lyngdoh were reported to have attended a meeting to topple the EC at an undisclosed location recently. Meanwhile, CEM Manstudy Nongrem has informed that the two MDCs would be replaced by HSPDP MDCs LG Nongsiej and KP Pangngiang.
